Impact of the Local Government Commission determination on the Auckland/Waikato regional boundary

As part of the reorganisation of local governance in the Auckland region, the Local Government Commission determined representation arrangements for the Auckland Council and detail of the new boundary between the Auckland and Waikato regions.

The reorganisation altered the North Waikato-Hauraki constituency northern boundary as it forms the Waikato region’s northern boundary

Key changes to the boundary

The boundaries around Waiuku and Pukekohe:

  • all of the Waiuku urban area and adjacent designated future growth areas will be in the Auckland region
  • all of Pukekohe and the adjacent area of Buckland will be in the Auckland region
  • the area east of Pukekohe and north of Mill Road will be in the Auckland region.

The Mangatawhiri and Mangatangi catchments and adjacent coastal margin will be in the Waikato region.

All of Karioitahi Beach is included in the Auckland region. However, most of the beach area between Karioitahi and the Waikato River mouth remains in the Waikato region.

The entire Paparimu community is to be included in Auckland. This means part of the Mangatawhiri Flood Control Scheme area will now be in Auckland.

The Waikato regional boundary at the Firth of Thames remains as proposed - the boundary meets the west coast of the Firth about two kilometres south of Matingarahi Point. The regional boundary then extends eastward to the centre of the firth and then north.

Constituency reviews

Local authorities are required by to review their representation arrangements, including constituency boundaries, at least every 6 years. Waikato Regional Council undertook a review of its representation arrangements in 2006, the result of which was that at the number of constituencies was reduced from 10 to 8 and the number of elected members was reduced from 14 to 12. The next review must be undertaken no later than 2012.
