Sources of particles in air

In the Waikato region, vehicles, home heating and industry are the main sources of air pollution. This indicator estimates the proportions of particles (PM₁₀) going into the air from each of these sources. Particles can affect people’s health by causing respiratory problems. They affect our environment by reducing visibility.

This indicator shows that:

• In Hamilton, Tokoroa, Taupo, Te Kuiti, Waihi, Matamata, Putaruru, Ngaruawahia, Te Awamutu and Turangi most PM₁₀ comes from domestic heating such as home fires.
