Wetlands in the Waikato region

In 1840 there were fewer, larger wetlands in the Waikato region. After 150 years of drainage, the large wetlands have been lost or split into small fragments. Today, most of the region’s wetlands are scattered and smaller than 50 ha. The once massive 25,840 ha Gordonton peat bog, for example, now consists of just one 60 ha remnant.
