Under the navigation safety bylaw:
- All personal water craft (jetskis) must be registered.
- You will need to complete a temporary event application for activities on the water such as races, speed trials or competitions if you:
- are unable to comply with the bylaw provisions during the event
- need to reserve an area for the event
- You can apply to Environment Waikato for an exemption from specific bylaw provisions in special circumstances.
- Moorings must be registered with council and meet safety requirements.
You may require a resource consent for swing mooring.

A hot works permit is required for welding, grinding or flame-cutting operations carried out on any vessel. Please contact us for more details.
Personal water craft (jetski) registration
Use this form to register your personal water craft (jetski) in the Waikato region. Personal water craft (jetskis) from other areas can be used in the Waikato region as long as they are registered with either Environment Waikato, or another regional council (such as Auckland or Northland). Temporary events

- intend to hold a race, speed trial, or other organised recreational water activity where you cannot comply with one or more of the rules in the Bylaw
- would like to reserve the area required for your event.

Bylaw exemptions
Use this form to apply for an exemption from any provision of the navigation safety bylaw if you consistently cannot comply with a rule within the bylaw. Any bylaw exemption granted may be subject to conditions, and will be effective for a specific time period that is considered appropriate by Environment Waikato.

Trip reporting 2 minute form
Download Water Safety New Zealand's 2 minute form and fill it in each time you head out on the water. The form helps you to record essential identification details about your boat as well as where you are headed and what time you will be back. It ensures someone on land knows your plans and can alert the Coastguard if you fail to return on time.
